Gestation period of cows, buffaloes and goats
Animal
Average gestation
Normal range
Cow (desi and crossbred)
283 days (about 9 months 10 days)
274–291 days
Buffalo
310 days (about 10 months 10 days)
300–320 days
Goat
150 days
145–155 days
Sheep
147 days
144–151 days
Heifers, twins and male calves tend to come a few days early; a long gestation can mean a large calf. Treat the date as the middle of a window, not a fixed day.
The last two months before calving
Dry her off about 60 days before calving. The udder rests and she gives more milk in the next lactation.
Give extra concentrate in the last 6–8 weeks (steaming up), plus mineral mixture, so she calves in good condition.
Keep her away from slippery floors, fights and long walks.
About a week before, move her to a clean, dry calving pen with fresh bedding.
Signs that calving is near
The udder fills and the teats look full and shiny.
The ligaments on both sides of the tail head become loose and sunken.
The vulva swells and a thick mucus string hangs down.
She becomes restless, lies down and gets up, and stays away from the herd.
If she strains for more than an hour without progress, or you see only a head or only one leg, call a vet at once.
After calving
The calf should get colostrum (khees) within the first hour.
The placenta usually comes out within 12 hours. If not, call the vet; don't pull it.
Watch for heat again from about 45 days; breeding at 60–90 days keeps a calving interval of 12–13 months.
