Milk fat and SNF rate calculator

Most dairies and cooperatives in India pay for milk by its fat and SNF, not just by the litre. Enter your milk's fat %, SNF % and your dairy's rates to check the amount on your slip.

How the fat and SNF rate is worked out

Under two-axis pricing the dairy pays separately for the fat and for the SNF (solids-not-fat: protein, lactose and minerals) in your milk:

Amount = milk kg × (fat % ÷ 100 × rate per kg fat + SNF % ÷ 100 × rate per kg SNF)

Example: 10 litres of cow milk is about 10.3 kg. At 4.0% fat that's 0.41 kg fat, and at 8.5% SNF it's 0.88 kg SNF. At ₹500 per kg fat and ₹220 per kg SNF the amount is ₹206 + ₹193 = ₹399, or about ₹40 a litre.

Dairies weigh milk in kg because fat and SNF are measured by weight. One litre of milk weighs about 1.03 kg (cow) to 1.032 kg (buffalo).

Normal fat and SNF in cow and buffalo milk

MilkFSSAI minimumUsual range
Cow3.2% fat, 8.3% SNF3.5–4.5% fat, 8.3–8.8% SNF
Buffalo6.0% fat, 9.0% SNF6.0–8.0% fat, 9.0–9.5% SNF

Fat changes from milking to milking: evening milk usually has more fat than morning milk, and the last milk out of the udder has the most.

How to raise fat and SNF

  • Enough dry fodder and green fodder: fibre is what makes milk fat. Too much concentrate and too little fodder lowers fat.
  • Mineral mixture and salt every day: low SNF often follows a mineral shortage.
  • Milk out fully at each milking, and keep the gap between milkings even.
  • Clean water at all times; heat stress lowers both fat and SNF.
  • Check for mastitis: an infected quarter gives milk with lower SNF.

Common questions

What is SNF in milk?

Solids-not-fat: everything in milk except water and fat, mainly protein, lactose (milk sugar) and minerals. Cow milk usually has 8.3–8.8% SNF.

How is the milk rate calculated from fat and SNF?

Kg of fat × rate per kg fat, plus kg of SNF × rate per kg SNF. Kg of fat = milk kg × fat % ÷ 100, and the same for SNF.

What is the FSSAI standard for cow milk?

At least 3.2% fat and 8.3% SNF. For buffalo milk it is 6.0% fat and 9.0% SNF.

Why does my fat reading change every day?

Fat depends on feed, the time of milking, how fully the cow is milked out and her stage of lactation. Evening milk usually has more fat.

Rates and formulas differ between dairies. Use your dairy's own rate chart; this calculator only does the arithmetic.
